Frequently Asked Bed Bug Questions

What should I do to prepare for my Bedbug service?

  • When removing/moving items, BAG THEM to prevent spreading any bed bugs.
  • Keep sleeping in the same rooms. Changing rooms will spread the bed bugs.
  • Remove all clutter from the floor and under the bed, including clothes, bags, etc. We can treat many items, such as luggage or other non-washable items. We don’t, however, provide laundry services.
  • Remove all bedding/clothing/curtains/blankets/pillows and seal in a plastic bag. Wash/dry at a high temperature.
  • Vacuum all floors. Pay extra attention to the areas around and under beds.
  • Move furniture and other items away from the walls, wherever possible.
  • Shoes should be heated or spray treated.
  • Severely infested mattresses and furniture (such as couches) may need to be disposed of, or you can purchase covers for them. We are usually able to treat and save most items.

How do I know if I have Bedbugs?

Bed bugs typically bite in bunches. The first sign is usually clusters of red, itchy spots on your body. Not all people notice bed bug bites. Some people have a more severe reaction than others. You may also notice brownish stains on your sheets, mattress, or box springs.

Except in cases of extreme infestation, people rarely see bed bugs, this is because they come out at night, and are very small and very good at hiding. They nest in everything from the seams of your mattress, to the picture frames on your walls. This makes them hard to treat with “over the counter” remedies.

The minute you suspect them should be the minute you call Hybrid Pest Control so that we can keep them from spreading.

Where do the bed bugs come from?

You can get them from movie theaters, hotels, restaurants, airlines, neighbors, etc. They spread easily. Their eggs are extremely small and stick to surfaces, including your clothes.

There are a number of steps you can take to limit your risk of getting bed bugs, and a wide array of products you can use to treat/prevent them:

Clean: While bed bugs can be found in even the cleanest homes, regular vacuuming and cleaning will help eliminate bed bugs. Clutter around or under beds provides ideal nesting locations for bed bugs.

Sprays: We offer safe, non-toxic personal carry sprays that can be used anywhere from your home, to movie theaters, hotels, and anywhere in between. View our products here. A few quick sprays will kill exposed bed bugs and their eggs:

Steri-fab kills bed bugs and their eggs on contact! Steri-Fab ($17.99): Dries in about 15 minutes. It kills Bed Bugs (and their eggs), Lice, Fleas, Ticks, Dust Mites, Bacteria, Fungus, Mold, Mildew, Viruses, and more! It’s also a great deodorizer. Once dry, it is odorless, colorless, and leaves no residue. It can be used on mattresses, furniture, carpets, and many other surfaces. It is great for travel. It has no residual effect, meaning it only kills while it is wet.

Bedlam kills bed bugs and their eggs on contact! Bedlam ($18.99): A residual aerosol spray designed to control bed bugs, lice, ticks, fleas, and dust mites on contact. It may be used as a crack and crevice treatment around baseboards, walls, etc. It is water-based and non-irritating, so it can be used to spot treat bedding/mattresses when controlling bed bugs. The residual effect lasts up to 6 weeks. Aerosol cans can’t be taken on airplanes.

Protective covers: Protective covers can be used to cover your pillow, mattress, box springs, couches, etc. They eliminate many hiding and nesting places for bed bugs. Bed bugs cannot get in/out of the covers, yet the covers are still comfortable to sleep on. They help prevent/control infestations.

Laundry: Wash all clothing, curtains, and all other fabrics frequently, and keep clothing in sealed bags when traveling and at home until all bedbugs are gone. Putting clothes in the dryer at high temperature for 5-10 minutes will kill any bed bugs and eggs.

Heat Treatments: Heat treatments (over 120°F) will kill bedbugs. Professional heat treatments can be performed on items that can not be sprayed, or on entire homes/apartments to instantly kill most bedbugs. You can also get a steam cleaner to treat many areas yourself.

What else should I know about bed bugs?

  • Bed bugs nest in mattress seams, box springs, and other places near the bed. However, we have seen them nesting in light fixtures, electrical outlets, laptop computers, under desks, in carpet, and other random places.
  • Bed bugs consume blood and can live over a year without feeding, but typically feed every 5-10 days.
  • Bed bugs are mostly active at night and hide during the day.
  • Bed bugs typically live for 1 year, though life spans vary.
  • Bed bugs normally nest near their food source (you).
  • Bed bugs can nest in small cracks and crevices, including in picture frames, mattress seams, etc.
  • Bed bugs lay their eggs in secluded areas, laying up to 5 a day and up to 500 in their lifetime.
  • Freshly hatched bedbugs are about the size of a pinhead.
  • Bed bug eggs typically hatch within 10 days.

All too often homes and hospitality bBedbugs hbpusinesses suffer from the infestation that wrecks your sleep- the invasion insect we call bed bugs.

Bed bugs are small reddish or brown insects, shaped like wingless flat ovals. Adults can grow to be between ¼ inch and 3/8 inch, the size of an apple seed. Bed bugs live off of human blood and are nocturnal so detection comes often only after an uncomfortable encounter. They also reproduce quickly, females lay up to 5 eggs a day reaching a total of 500 in a lifetime! This means bed bugs will not just go away, and even worse can live over 300 days inappropriate room temperatures with a constant supply of food.

In summary: They’re hard to kill, drink your blood, can live for ridiculous amounts of time without feeding, nest in tiny cracks, lay a lot of eggs, their bite is MUCH worse than their bark, and they are stealthier than 1/2″ tall ninjas!
